Getting Started

Why is this a no-cost program?

King County has developed the Children’s Oral Health initiative to make sure King County children are receiving dental care. Washington Dental Service has sponsored this program with a gift of $1 Million in partnership with King County Executive Ron Sims' Children's Health Initiative. WDS is using their Participating PPO Dentist network to provide the services.

What if I have dental insurance but it doesn't cover everything?

If your children already have insurance or state Medicaid, they do not qualify for this program. This is for non-insured children only.

How will I know if I am officially enrolled?

Once the KC KIDS Children’s Oral Health Program confirms your eligibility, they will mail you an enrollment kit that includes a WDS patient card and benefits handbook that includes a list of Participating PPO Dentists in your area. Remember, the KC KIDS program only runs during 2008, so be sure to take advantage of the free services this year.

How will I know if I do not qualify?

You will receive a letter in the mail stating you do not qualify.

May I choose any dentist?

You may choose any dentist in the Washington Dental Service PPO Provider Network. Your benefits handbook will include a list of Participating PPO Dentists in your area. View the PPO Dentist Directory

Can I get the enrollment form in another language?

Yes. KC KIDS enrollment forms are now available in Vietnamese, and will soon be available in Spanish.

About Coverage

Do I have to pay for any dental services?

No - as long as your children go to a WDS Participating PPO Dentist, you do not have to pay for covered services. Be sure to present your WDS patient card to the dentist each time your child goes for services during 2008.

Does the program cover all dental services?

This program covers most standard dental services, but not everything. The benefits handbook includes a list of covered services. If you have questions, call the toll-free KC KIDS Customer Service number (866) 839-9466 (also on the patient card).

How long does coverage last?

Once your children are enrolled in the KC KIDS program, they are covered until December 31, 2008 (unless they turn age 20 before then). You do not need to re-enroll throughout 2008. However, in January 2009, you will need to re-apply for dental benefits through the state of WA.

Who gets the bill when I see the dentist?

The dentist will send a claim to WDS for the services provided and WDS will pay the dentist —there will be no expenses billed to you. However, if you go to a non-participating dentist or request services that are not covered by the program, you must pay for the services.

What if I get a bill from the dentist saying I owe money?

It may be a billing error or you received services not covered by the program. Call our toll-free Customer Service claims department at (800) 238-3107 and we will help you resolve it.

What should I do in case of a dental emergency?

If a dental emergency happens, call your dentist’s office and ask them what you should do. If the emergency is life threatening, call 911 or the phone number for emergency medical services in your area.

What if my child needs specialty dental care?

First talk to your regular dentist about getting specialty care. If they refer you to a specialist, be sure that provider is in the WDS Participating PPO Network, otherwise, WDS will not cover the services and you must pay for them.

How do I get a replacement patient card?

If you need a replacement card, you can request one by calling KC KIDS Customer Service toll-free at (866) 839-9466.

Why do I need to re-apply in 2009?

The state of Washington will be taking over this program in January 2009 so you will need to apply with the state to continue dental coverage for your children.

For Providers Only

To whom do I send claims for this program?

You should submit claims to Washington Dental Service just like any other plan, and call the WDS claims number if you have questions regarding payment and claims. You will be reimbursed your approved PPO filed fees.

Who do I call with questions about patient eligibility?

Call the KC KIDS Customer Service number (866) 839-9466 (this number is also on the patient's insurance card). Once the patient is enrolled, they qualify for services until December 31, 2008.

How do I know if a patient is on the program?

The patient will have a WDS patient card that includes their name, group name (KC KIDS Dental) and group number (00573). This program uses an alternative ID in place of a social security number.

What if I have a patient that has no insurance coverage?

Please give the patient our website information to learn about eligibility and enrollment for the KC KIDS program.
